Semiconductor Material Science (Masters/PhDs)

$75-90/hrRemoteFreelanceSTEM

About the Role

What if your deep expertise in semiconductor materials or molecular modeling could directly shape how AI reasons about the physical world? We're looking for Materials Science specialists — Masters and PhD level — to work alongside leading AI research teams, helping train and evaluate cutting-edge AI models on some of the most complex problems in modern science.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for researchers and domain experts who want to do meaningful, intellectually stimulating work on their own schedule. No prior AI experience required — your scientific expertise is what matters.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Develop, solve, and critically review advanced material science problems with real-world relevance
  • Apply your expertise in semiconductor materials, molecular modeling, or related disciplines to design and evaluate complex problem statements
  • Collaborate asynchronously with AI researchers and fellow domain experts to strengthen AI model reasoning
  • Ensure scientific rigor, clarity, and depth across all deliverables
  • Help push the frontier of what AI can understand and reason about in the physical sciences

Who You Are

  • Master's or PhD in Material Science, or a closely related field
  • Strong expertise in semiconductor materials, molecular modeling, or adjacent research areas
  • Proficient in Python or MATLAB for research or project work
  • Exceptionally clear communicator — both in writing and verbally — with strong attention to detail
  • Self-directed and reliable when working independently in an asynchronous environment
  • Based in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, or New Zealand

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience with data annotation, data quality evaluation, or AI training workflows
  • Background in computational materials science, DFT, or simulation-based research
  • Experience writing or reviewing technical documentation for non-specialist audiences
  • Familiarity with AI tools or evaluation platforms as an end user

Why Join Us

  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects alongside leading research labs and AI teams
  • Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, domain-specific work
  • Apply your advanced scientific expertise in a completely new and impactful context
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
