About the Role
What if your fluency in Dutch or Afrikaans — and your ability to catch every word even in noisy, fast-paced audio — could directly shape how AI understands Germanic languages spoken by millions of people? We're looking for detail-oriented transcriptionists in South Africa to produce accurate, high-quality transcriptions of Dutch-language audio, helping build the datasets that teach AI systems how real people actually speak.
This is a fully remote, flexible contract role open to anyone with native or near-native Dutch or strong Afrikaans fluency, exceptional listening skills, and a methodical approach to accuracy. No prior AI experience needed — just sharp ears and a commitment to quality.
- Organization: Alignerr
- Type: Hourly Contract
- Location: Remote
- Commitment: 10–40 hours/week
What You'll Do
- Listen to Dutch-language audio recordings and produce precise, verbatim transcriptions
- Handle challenging audio conditions — including crosstalk, filled pauses ("uhm," "eh," "hmm"), background noise, and multiple simultaneous speakers
- Accurately identify and distinguish between different speakers throughout recordings
- Follow detailed style and formatting guidelines with consistency and precision
- Apply transcription conventions for non-verbal sounds, incomplete utterances, and other spoken-language phenomena
- Maintain high quality and accuracy standards across large volumes of audio
- Work independently and asynchronously on task-based assignments at your own pace
Who You Are
- Native or near-native fluency in Dutch, or very strong Afrikaans fluency with solid comprehension of Standard Dutch
- Exceptional listening skills with the ability to parse difficult or noisy audio
- Highly detail-oriented with a methodical, patient approach to repetitive tasks
- Comfortable following and consistently applying detailed style guides and formatting rules
- Strong written Dutch skills — spelling, punctuation, and grammar are second nature
- Self-motivated and reliable when working independently without direct supervision
- Comfortable using web-based tools and platforms
Nice to Have
- Professional experience in transcription, stenography, or court reporting
- Background in subtitling, closed-captioning, or media production
- Linguistics training or academic background in Dutch, Afrikaans, or Germanic language studies
- Prior experience with annotation platforms or data labeling workflows
- Familiarity with transcription software or audio editing tools
- Understanding of the relationship between Dutch and Afrikaans phonology and vocabulary
