Mathematics Researcher (Masters/PhDs)

$75-90/hrRemoteFreelanceSTEM

About the Role

What if your deep knowledge of mathematics could directly shape how AI reasons through the world's most complex problems? We're looking for Mathematics Researchers to help train and evaluate cutting-edge AI models — crafting rigorous problems, assessing solutions, and pushing the boundaries of what AI can reason through.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for people with serious mathematical credentials. If you hold a Master's or PhD in mathematics or a related field and want to put your expertise to work on something genuinely meaningful, this is the opportunity.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Develop, solve, and review advanced mathematical problems with real-world relevance and depth
  • Apply expertise in algebra, calculus, statistics, discrete mathematics, or related areas to design complex, well-structured problem statements
  • Evaluate AI-generated mathematical reasoning for correctness, rigor, and clarity
  • Collaborate asynchronously with AI researchers and domain experts to strengthen AI model performance
  • Ensure mathematical precision and depth across all deliverables
  • Work independently on task-based assignments — fully on your own schedule

Who You Are

  • Holds a Master's or PhD in Mathematics or a closely related field
  • Deep expertise in one or more areas: algebra, calculus, statistics, or discrete mathematics
  • Experienced with Python, MATLAB, or Mathematica for research or applied projects
  • Exceptionally precise — you care about correctness and communicate it clearly
  • Strong written communicator who can explain complex ideas with accuracy and clarity
  • Fluent in English and based in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Australia, or New Zealand

Nice to Have

  • Prior experience with data annotation, data quality, or AI evaluation workflows
  • Background in academic research, mathematical modeling, or applied mathematics
  • Familiarity with AI or machine learning concepts
  • Experience reviewing or grading mathematical work at an advanced level

Why Join Us

  • Work on cutting-edge AI projects alongside leading research labs
  • Fully remote and flexible — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance autonomy with the structure of meaningful, task-based work
  • Make a direct, measurable impact on how AI understands and reasons through mathematics
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
