Structural Engineering Expert – Building Design & AI Quality Review
About the Role
What if you could use your structural engineering expertise to help improve how AI systems evaluate real building projects?
We're looking for experienced structural engineers and building design professionals in the Sydney area to review building models, construction drawings, and design documentation. You'll help assess the quality and consistency of building projects, evaluate automated quality checks, and provide expert feedback based on real engineering standards and practices.
Your expertise will help us determine whether automated systems can identify the issues that an experienced engineer would catch — from structural inconsistencies to documentation gaps and potential design concerns.
This is a fully remote, part-time contract opportunity for professionals who want to apply their engineering knowledge to an emerging area of AI development.
Position Details
Organization: Alignerr
Type: Hourly Contract
Location: Fully Remote
Commitment: 20 hours per week
What You'll Do
Review Automated Quality Checks
Evaluate rules designed to identify issues in building models and drawings, such as unsupported elements, columns resting on beams, duplicate components, and missing or mislabelled spaces. Identify checks that are missing, overly strict, or too permissive.
Evaluate Design Documentation
Review Basis of Design documents to assess whether applicable building codes, design loads, fire and life safety strategies, egress requirements, elevator criteria, and structural design criteria are appropriate for the building type and jurisdiction — including Australia's National Construction Code (NCC) and relevant Australian Standards.
Validate Completed Building Projects
Review samples of 3D building models, construction drawing sets, and design documentation to identify inconsistencies and assess whether the project is technically coherent and buildable.
Help Establish Quality Standards
Provide expert input on the criteria that distinguish basic, professional, and premium quality building projects.
Provide Actionable Technical Feedback
Explain identified issues and recommend improvements based on your professional experience and applicable engineering standards.
Who You Are
- An experienced structural engineer, civil engineer, architect, or building design professional with strong technical knowledge of building projects.
- Knowledgeable in building codes and design standards, including Australia's NCC and ideally standards from other countries or jurisdictions.
- Experienced in writing or reviewing Basis of Design documents, design criteria, or equivalent technical documentation.
- Comfortable reviewing construction drawing sets and 3D BIM models.
- Familiar with IFC models and tools such as Revit, Solibri, BIMcollab Zoom, or BlenderBIM.
- Able to assess technical quality, identify inconsistencies, and distinguish genuine design issues from acceptable engineering decisions.
- Comfortable working independently and providing clear, well-reasoned technical feedback.
Relevant Expertise
Experience with one or more of the following areas is particularly valuable.
Building Codes and Standards
Australia's NCC, relevant Australian Standards, IBC, ASCE 7, the Eurocodes, or other applicable regional and international codes.
Structural Engineering
Structural analysis, member utilisation, deflection, drift, and the evaluation of structural systems.
Fire and Life Safety
Egress requirements, travel distances, fire ratings, and building life safety strategies compliant with Australian requirements.
BIM Coordination and Quality Assurance
Model checking, clash detection, interdisciplinary coordination, and construction model validation.
Building Design
Experience with hospitals, transportation facilities, data centres, offices, cultural buildings, or other complex building types.
What You'll Review
The project focuses on complete building project packages, including the following materials.
3D Building Models
IFC4 models containing digital representations of building components and spaces.
Construction Drawings
PDF drawing sets used to communicate design intent and construction requirements.
Basis of Design Documents
Technical documentation defining the codes, assumptions, loads, and design criteria used for a building project.
You'll evaluate these materials together to determine whether the models, drawings, and design documentation are accurate, consistent, and aligned with real engineering practices.
Good to Know
- This is a remote, hourly contract opportunity with an expected commitment of 20 hours per week.
- The work focuses on expert review, technical evaluation, and quality assessment rather than producing complete building designs from scratch.
- Relevant professional experience and familiarity with applicable building codes are important for success in this role.
