Applied Formal Methods Researcher (Lean 4)

$170-200/hrRemoteFreelanceSTEM

About the Role

What if your deep mathematical training could directly shape how AI reasons about formal proofs? We're looking for mathematicians and formal verification specialists to translate complex human arguments into machine-verifiable Lean 4 proofs — working at the very edge of what automated reasoning can achieve.

This is a fully remote, flexible contract role built for serious mathematicians who are passionate about formal verification and want their expertise to matter at the frontier of AI research.

  • Organization: Alignerr
  • Type: Hourly Contract
  • Location: Remote
  • Commitment: 10–40 hours/week

What You'll Do

  • Translate informal mathematical proofs into precise, machine-verifiable formalizations in Lean 4
  • Analyze proofs across domains — identifying hidden assumptions, structural gaps, and formalizable sub-components
  • Construct formalizations that probe and expose the limits of existing proof assistants
  • Collaborate with AI researchers to design and refine strategies for improving formal verification pipelines
  • Develop clean, readable, and reproducible proof scripts aligned with best practices and Lean idioms
  • Provide expert guidance on proof decomposition, lemma selection, and formal model structuring
  • Investigate where automated provers break down and articulate the underlying reasons — whether complexity, missing lemmas, or library gaps
  • Create Lean proofs that reveal deeper patterns or generalizations implicit in the source mathematics

Who You Are

  • Hold a Master's degree or higher in Mathematics, Logic, Theoretical Computer Science, or a closely related field
  • Possess a strong foundation in rigorous proof writing across areas such as algebra, analysis, topology, logic, or discrete mathematics
  • Have hands-on experience with Lean (Lean 3 or Lean 4), Coq, Isabelle/HOL, Agda, or comparable systems — Lean 4 strongly preferred
  • Genuinely enthusiastic about formal verification, proof assistants, and the future of mechanized mathematics
  • Able to take dense, informal mathematical arguments and express them with the precision a machine can verify

Nice to Have

  • Familiarity with type theory, the Curry-Howard correspondence, and proof automation tools
  • Experience contributing to large-scale formalization projects such as Mathlib
  • Exposure to theorem provers where automated reasoning frequently fails or requires significant manual scaffolding
  • Prior experience with data annotation, evaluation systems, or AI training workflows
  • Strong communication skills for articulating formalization decisions, edge cases, and reasoning strategies

Why Join Us

  • Work directly on cutting-edge AI research alongside world-leading labs and research teams
  • Fully remote and asynchronous — work when and where it suits you
  • Freelance autonomy with meaningful, intellectually stimulating work
  • Contribute to building the future of mechanized mathematics and AI reasoning
  • Potential for ongoing work and contract extension as new projects launch
